Today, Destin has a population of about 1,000 people and a fishing industry worth millions of dollars every year.

Destin's modern history began in 1842, when the Federal War Department established the Moreno Point military reserve, which included the modern one - then called Moreno's Point - as part of a coastal defense. Marler, who was working on the site of the early settlers who had been fishing in the area's waters for years, re-submitted the application under the name "Destiny." In 1851, Leonard Dest married Martha McCullum of South Carolina, and the couple moved to a camp he had set up at Moreno's, or "Moreno Point."
